SBCGS Upcoming Events – 2010
February 20, 2010 Program
February 20, 2010 Program - It's another 2-fer:
Saturday, February 20, 2010
9:30 - Noon
First Presbyterian Church, 21 N. Constance at State
Speaker: Jeff Richman, Historian for the Green-Wood Cemetery.
9:30-10:15: "No Longer Forgotten: The Search for Civil War Veterans at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery."
It was naively thought that there were 500 or so Civil War veterans interred there. Was that wrong! In the ensuing years, with the help of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, searches of newspapers, books, muster rolls, as well as many other resources, have identified 4,300. Join Jeff Richman for his account of this research and its most interesting results.
11-12 noon: "Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery: Unearthing New York's Buried Treasures"
Join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery's historian and the author of Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery: New York's Buried Treasure, for a slide show talk about this fascinating place. It is the final resting place of more than half a million people, including famous permanent residents Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Horace Greeley, and Samuel Morse. Jeff Richman has been Green-Wood’s historian since 2000. He is also the author of Final Camping Ground: Civil War Veterans at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, In Their Own Words. http://www.green-wood.com/index.php/gwhf.
